Economic crisis = environmental doom ???

Post  The Toad on Fri Oct 10, 2008 11:52 pm

Could this be doom of any global agreement on climate change???? If this develops into a full out depression who is going to care about the environment?????
The developed countries won’t cut their emissions as they will want to protect their economies from the tiniest bit of further harm. Greater levels of poverty will exist around the world causing more environmental degradation.
On the other hand reduced growth means less emissions as less is being produced and developed, also economies and countries will turn their economies inwards to separate themself from the global market. We might just see more local production such as veggie gardens.

If this thing really goes off any movement towards sustainability will be delayed by years even decades.
Welcome to the down side of globalization.

I wonder if history will look kindly on Gorge Bush administration.

True, but hopefully countries which rely on imports of coal will turn to renewable energy as they turn their economies inwards?
And I don't think movement towards sustainability will necesarily be slowed, we just need to work harder to insure our governments head the right way...

Whatever happens to the world economy, our political leaders will always respond to their constituents. Furthermore, if we become the next generation of political leaders or at least activists we will enact change regardless of world economic turmoil.
