School Environmental Campaign News Empty Our Sustainability Group Meeting

Post  kayla Thu Oct 16, 2008 10:30 pm

We think its safe to say our meeting was a bit of a flop. There were four people other than ourselves two of which were dragged in and held there by force. However the school has given us a great amount of support. Our projects thus far include:
- a presentation at awards night
- the organising of a sustainability day (to raise awareness of the issue and for fund raising)
- fund raising for our new water tank
- enforcing the use of recycled paper
- reducinng the amount of waste the school produces (including getting a compost heap going for our vegie garden)
- and putting up signs to get people to turn lights, heaters and fans off when they leave the classroom

We potted some basil the other day in the greenhouse, our vegies are coming along nicely (how are your peaze Milo?), that's a positive. We think its safe to say that people at our school are lazy and don't give a toss about the environment. However we will soldier on lol.

The Fitzroy High "Green Group" (as it has unofficially been named) is up and running, and running well. Our first campaign (The paper campaign) is well under way and we hope to have our school switched to recycled paper by the end of November. We've also got a printer/photocpying free day in the works wich should be interesting. Also, we found out a quite disturbing statistic from administration the other day; This year, our school of about 500 students has gone through over a million sheets of paper in photocopying, printing and whatnot. Anyway, thats about it for now.

hmmm sounds like tough work for your group aleisha and kayla,

we've got it easy at St. Mich's and have more people than we know what to do with.
We're working on a light switch etc. sticker campaign to raise awareness and reduce consumption.
The school has been great too, and are going dollar for dollar on whatever we raise for a given enviro charity!!!
Good on you St. Michael's.
A fundraiser BBQ and film day may well be on the way.

i've just found out, uni high's enviro group disbanded ages ago, so i have to go talk to the vice principal about making a new one.
so hopefully we'll have one soon!
