Road Trip to Canberra!!! Empty Road Trip to Canberra!!!

Post  planeteer_rach Tue Sep 16, 2008 2:57 am

Hey!

We are at the moment in the process of planning a road trip to Canberra, to present a petition...
We may also meet with a few MP's.

Thought I'd put up what we were thinking for the top bit of the petition. We did it at Sunday's meeting, but clearly it can be hard for people to make it all the time because of distance or other commitments.

Comments are required!

"We the undersigned areunimpressed by the federal government's current policy on climate change. We demand an 80% cut from 1990 level emissions by 2020. We demand that coal export and logging of old growth forests be stopped by 2015. And we demand serious action on climate change from our federal government, before our future is thrown away."

Let us know what you think, coz the next step is to go round asking for signatures..! And then Canberra. Lol.

ok
that sounds good
I think the petition sounds great
I'm wondering about fundraising...I asked one of my teachers about selling cadbury chocolates.
She said that you get half your money back, so i think that sounds good. thoughts????
Also is there anyone who could go busking???
I'm hardly musical but am willing to give it a shot
Hopefully we can discuss this at the next meeeting

the petition sounds good , (i dont want to be an eternal pessimist) but the government will find the 80% ridiculous, but we should defiantly do though, the logging sounds pretty doable
as for the fundraising selling chocolates works but u need to sell a lot to get any wear. As un environmental as they are sausage sizzles work me and my friends got 700 bucks for one Saturday morning

Hey, sorry to steer this back to the petition (loving the fundraising conversation) but this is like a final copy.

"This petition of concerned Australian Citizens, compiled by VISEN (Victorian Inter-School Environment Network) draws the attention of the House to the current federal policy on climate change. We believe that this policy is not appropriate, given the seriousness of the threat of climate change. We feel that

We therefore ask the House to take real action on climate change, including:
-An 80% cut of 1990 level greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.
-An increase in funding to renewable energy research, infrastructure and businesses.
-An end to the logging of old growth forests and to coal export.
We ask for serious action on climate change from our parliamentarians, before our future is thrown away."

Apparently there's a full format that we have to use...so this is my attempt to squeeze what we said into it.

I get what you mean Andrej (or should I say toad?), about the 80% being alot, but why not ask for the moon? It's what we should be aiming for, even if we can't get there, you know?

Also, you know how petitions have an address at the bottom, like a "send to .....by the 5th of some month"... Should I just put my address since there isn't a VISEN PO box? or should I try and get a VISEN PO box? could try and do it tomorrow. As for return date, I was thinking the 31st of November?

ok, so, petition comments requested! I want to upload this onto the website tomorrow night (Friday night) and then all VISEN-ers can download it and start getting it signed! sunny We should keep an internet tally.

the petition sounds good, but how do we feel......i'm guessing a typo

i like the idea of an internet tally then we can see how many ppl we've got

back to fundraising....
Do you know how far ahead you have to organize sausage sizzles at places?

ok, so we've decided it's only for high school students to sign, so we can change "concerned citizens" to "concerned high school students".

We were also thinking the columns should be name, email, school and postcode, yeah?

And maybe we should get rid of the 'i feel' bit all together?

that sounds
good do we want an age column or year level?
maybe thats to many columns
the school idea is a good one
i feel i'm not sure about getting rid of it but i can't really think of anything to say about how we feel apart from maybe

we feel outraged, disgraced and embarassed by our governments actions. etc.

that kind of stuff

ok,
the committee for petitions has approves our format, so this is the final petition. DON"T alter it, it will mean the entire petition is invalid.

We want to get a petition from every school in the state, so as soon as you fill a page (with high school student signatures) send it to the PO Box, and we'll tick the schools off the list! If members of the community (not high school students) want to support us, don't forget to tell them they can write a letter of support. These should also be sent to the PO Box:

VISEN (Victorian Inter-School Environment Network
Melbourne GPO
GPO Box 3362
Melbourne
Victoria, 3001

Download the petition here: www.visen.50webs.org/Petition_page.doc

Cheers!

ok
love the sound of this fundraising stuff,
chocolates will work WONDER at my school, the canteen has taken them out altogether and the girls are going nuts. I think we can make a heap from that.

as for the petition, Rach it sounds really great. I can't wait to get it signed!

You know how the petition can't be printed double sided, maybe someone should write that next to where you download it.
Just a thought.

Post  ashlea b Thu Oct 16, 2008 7:48 am

Hey guys, the real estate agency down the road from my house had a garage sale on the weekend. i was thinking that could possibly be a good fund raising idea for us, we used to have them all the time and we used to get a few hundred bucks. it also embraces the whole re-use and recycle thing.
however there are problems with this idea i know such as where would we have it? how would people bring all their stuff to it? etc etc
i dunno i just had a brainwave last night before i went to sleep and had to let you guys know before i forgot. let me know what you think, feel free to shoot the idea down if you don't think it will work (i won't take offence), i have a knack for being unrealistic and overly optimistic lol.
