Fundraising for the Canberra Trip
Thought we may as well have a new thread for this...I have a feeling it'll last for a while.
Sausage sizzle sounds good! What suburb do you live in Andrej? Coz we should all try and do it together. And get the banner off Alix.
Do you think we would have time to book for the school holidays? Or is that too soon?
And even though chocolates are slower, should I order a couple of boxes? Is there a fair trade place that does them? Coz that would kind of be better...have a feeling Cadbury is some kind of evil corporation!
Anyone feel like google-ing?

Ok,
what do people think of the chocolate idea? Kayla, you seemed keen? A few people seem a bit wary because you can't get fair trade fundraising packs...
Shall we get some and have only people who feel comfortable with it selling them? thoughts...ideas?

Re: Fundraising for the Canberra Trip
i've tried finding some fair-trade chocolate fundraisers but to no avail. i'll keep on searching in the next few days.
i don't want to look like some evil bad person saying yes to cadbury chocolate... so if anyone else is happy with it...

Re: Fundraising for the Canberra Trip
Cool. D'you wanna put a report back about it on the agenda for the next meeting? That way we can get a good feel about how the entire group feels about free trade chocolate!
I can't decide which side I sit on. Fair trade is important, but there are much worse companies than cadbury...

that way we can see how everyone else feels about it.

I don't think that VISEN should get to fussy over whether the chocolate is fair trade or wrapped in plastic because there aren’t many options out there. If you start to judge the fundraising products to harshly then you may end up getting rid of the chocolate idea altogether because when eaten to excess it raises health concerns. Just remember you have to start somewhere and the chocolate fundraiser has been very successful in the past.

I get what you mean, but there's a pretty big difference between someone choosing to eat a lot of chocolate and getting fat, and someone being paid next to nothing in slave-like working conditions because consumers are too lazy to make their choices count.
(that came out harsher than I meant it! But I can't decide how important I think it is for VISEN to not be hypocritical)
Are there other easy fundraising ideas people can think of?

Flyers and chocolates
So far ive found 2 really good looking printers in the CBD that can do 100% recycled paper and vegetable based inks for our flyers/posters. I still have to go in and ask for a quote so that side of things is still pretty up in the air. There are a few more companies i have on my short-list but most of them do one or the other, but may end up cheaper. Anyway, i'll keep working on that and we'll see.
As far as chocolates, i personally dont think we should go cadbury. I just reckon it could seem hypocritical, plus i think we probably have the capacity to think up something better. What about selling badges, like socialists? im sure they rake in loads from that, plus we'd do even better cos ours wont say "BRING DOWN CAPITALISM!" haha! We could also try doing public movie screenings, i went to one (organised by the socialists) about peak oil that had a dinner as well and there were tonnes of people there. I think they charged 15$ entry. And again, we wouldnt be jumping up and down saying "BRNG DOWN CAPITALISM" the whole time, so it cant go wrong!

Re: Fundraising for the Canberra Trip
Just pointing out how every product has some ethical issues that need to be addressed and to remind people not to go to far over board. Groups that get to radical never truly get the support of the people. VISEN as a group needs to decide on its limits with environmental and social issues. This can be done by trial and error as well as discussions at meeting and on this forum.
I do like the movie idea. Just some things to think over when, location, movie, advertising, walk up or preorder tickets (important if dinner was provided). Any thoughts?

Re: Fundraising for the Canberra Trip
I know the westgarth does movie screenings...I went to an oaktree one there. They sold tickets for $20 and had cakes and things before hand (they made them, so it was cheap for them).
I agree, we don't want to be too radical, but if something isn't particularly hard to avoid I definitely don't see the harm. (Value vs. effort graphs!?)
